From July 1913, the Malay Sultans led by Sultan Alang Iskandar Shah (Perak), Sultan Alaudin Sulaiman Shah (Selangor), Yam Tuan Tunaku Muhammad Shah (Negeri Sembilan) and Sultan Abu Bakar (Pahang) frequently expressed their desire to have a Malay Regiment in the Federated Malay State.
The proposal was to replace the Indian Battalion with a body of Malay troops who would share responsibility of military defense and protection of their homeland.
The Malay Regiment Bill was tabled on a Certificate of Urgency and passed by the Federal Council on 23 January 1933.March 1st 1933 marks the official birth of the Malay Regiment. The formation of the regiment fulfilled the frequently expressed desire of the Sultans and their subjects in the Federated Malay States to establish a body of Malay troops who would share the responsibility of military defence and protection of their homeland.
On 1st March 1933, first squad was formed comprising of 25 Malays. It was based at an old volunteer camp five miles from the town of Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan.
This regiment continued to develop into a full battalion known as First Battalion Malay Regiment on January 1, 1938. Second Battalion was established on December 1, 1941, six days before the start of the Second World War in Malaya.
